EXPANDED BUS SERVICE PLANNED FOR 2016 IN THE PEE DEE

Expanded Service in 2016

posted on Monday, December 21, 2015

Board Meeting PicBy the middle of January, residents of Lamar and Timmonsville will be able to connect to Darlington from 8 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. on four laps each Monday. On Tuesdays starting at 9:10 a.m., bus service will loop through Coward, Scranton, Lake City and Olanta until 4p.m. to 5p.m. And on Wednesday, bues will depart Olanta at 8 a.m. before stopping in Timmonsville, Darlington, and Lamar.

Authority executive director Chuck MacNeil asked for and received board approval Thursday evening for the expansion. He said Genesis Health Care Inc. -which has clinics in Darlington and Olanta and one planned for Lamar -  has agreed to subsidize service with $5,000 each month. The company has also paid to have advertisements placed on buses.

MacNeil told the board he wanted "other stakeholders to follow their lead", and showed pictures of buses with Genesis ads.

"They're paying us to be able to promote their clinics," he said.

As the transportation authority is a pulic entity, stops will be made elsewhere along the way, he said, while noting that patients of the clinic will be able to ride free if they're going to the clinic.

"We propose to start this service - I don't want to shoot myself in the foot - by mid January"' with the 18th as a target date, he said.

Public meetings that have already been held resulted in positive feedback, he said, and he wants to start getting the word out and explaining the new routes to residents "so they know it's going to be there."

"I see it as a win-win for PDRTA, "Gause said, noting that Genesis opened doors to the possibility of applying for additonal funding sources
