VAN POOLS: A Win-Win for Employers and Employees

People want to work but don’t have a way to get there. Employers are frustrated when their employees don’t show up because their ride didn’t show or their car broke down. Employees who live a considerable distance from their jobs find themselves working one day out of five just to pay for the gas to get there.
All of these situations are not uncommon in the Pee Dee. Statistics show that large numbers of employees travel out of town and out of county to work every day, and that 20, 30, and 40 mile commutes are not uncommon. How many unemployed are willing and able to work but don’t have transportation? That number isn’t known, but any employment office will tell you that lack of transportation is a huge barrier when it comes to people working.
Van Pools are one of the alternatives that employees and employers alike can look to for a solution to the transportation problem. Under PDRTA’s van pool system, PDRTA will provide a vehicle, insurance, gas, and maintenance for a group going to work. The cost is shared by the riders, and simple math says that ride sharing is cheaper than one-person-one-car. Under IRS rules, the employer can designate transit costs as tax free, so the van pooling employee saves even more. If the employer subsidizes the cost of the Van Pool, then the employer doesn’t have to pay payroll taxes on those dollars. Congress recently increased the amount that employees and employers can claim for transit to $115 per month per employee. It’s a win-win arrangement for both sides!
